The name of Inukami-gun, Omi Province. In the current area of Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, there was a post station on the Nakasen Road. The area inherits the name of the ancient Takamiya-go in Inukami-gun, as recorded in the Wamyō Ruijūshō, and Takamiyaho and Takamiya-sho were established in the Middle Ages. It was a main road connecting Kyoto and the eastern provinces, and is mentioned in the Togoku Kiko and Minoji Kiko. In the Edo period, the townscape was 7 cho 16 ken, with 835 houses and 3,560 people, one main inn, two side inns, one wholesaler's place, 23 inns, and 50 people and 50 horses (Yadomura Daigaicho). The rice bill exchange office of the Hikone Domain was also located here. It was also a temple town of Taga Taisha Shrine, and a large torii gate stands in the inn. In 1449, ten bolts of Takamiya cloth were donated, and in 1548, Rokkaku Sadayori donated ten bolts of Takamiya cloth to Honganji Shonyo. Hemp cloth, which has a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, became known throughout the country during the Edo period under the protection and control of the Hikone Domain. 近江国犬上郡の地名。現在の滋賀県彦根市域で,中山(なかせん)道の宿駅が置かれていた。《和名類聚抄》に記す古代の犬上郡高宮郷の郷名を継承する地で,中世には高宮保・高宮荘が成立している。当時から京都と東国を結ぶ幹道にあたり,《東国紀行》《美濃路紀行》などにみえる。江戸時代の町並は7町16間で,宿内家数835・人数3560人,本陣1軒・脇本陣2軒,問屋場1ヵ所,旅籠23軒で,宿建人馬50人・50疋であった(《宿村大概帳》)。また彦根藩の米札引替所が設置されていた。多賀大社の門前町でもあり,宿内に大鳥居が建つ。1449年に高宮布10反が贈与され,1548年に六角定頼(さだより)が本願寺証如に高宮布10反を贈るなど,中世以来の伝統をもつ麻布は,江戸時代には彦根藩の保護統制のもとで諸国に知られるようになった。時宗寺院の高宮(こうぐう)寺がある。
