江戸時代信濃(しなの)国佐久(さく)郡小諸(現、長野県小諸市)に藩庁をおいた、初め外様(とざま)藩、のち譜代(ふだい)藩。藩校は明倫堂(めいりんどう)。仙石秀久(せんごくひでひさ)は小田原征伐で功績をあげ、1590年(天正(てんしょう)18)に、豊臣秀吉(とよとみひでよし)から小諸5万石を与えられた。秀吉死後は徳川方につき領地は安堵(あんど)された。秀久は精力的に小諸城と城下町の建設に取り組んだが、あまりの酷使に一郡逃散(ちょうさん)を引き起こした。子の忠政(ただまさ)は民生安定に努めたが、1622年(元和(げんな)8)に上田藩へ移封(いほう)され、小諸藩は一時甲府藩預かりとなった。松平(久松)憲良(のりなが)が24年(寛永(かんえい)1)に4万5000石で入って以降は譜代藩となり、48年(慶安1)青山宗俊(むねとし)(3万石)、62年(寛文(かんぶん)2)酒井忠能(ただよし)(3万石)、79年(延宝(えんぽう)7)西尾忠成(ただなり)(2万7000石)、82年(天和(てんな)2)松平(石川)乗政(のりまさ)(2代・2万石)と交代した。次いで1702年(元禄15)に牧野康重(やすしげ)が1万5000石で入封、以後明治維新まで牧野氏10代が続いた。1871年(明治4)の廃藩置県により、小諸県を経て長野県に編入された。
