A long-distance luxury train that originated in Europe. A luxury train is a train with many first-class passenger cars and has better interiors and services than regular trains.
The train, which began operation in 1883 by the Belgian company Wagoneer (now headquartered in Paris), was a luxury train that ran between Paris (France) and Istanbul (Turkey) and was popular among royalty and business people during its heyday in the 1930s, and was later the setting for Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express." The company also operated luxury trains with the same name that connected Western and Eastern Europe.
After World War II, due to the division of East and West China, the service continued, but did not return to smooth operation. In 1962, the luxury train was replaced by an ordinary night train without a dining car, and by the end of its life, the passenger base had become mainly general passengers. In 1967, Wagoneer changed its name to the International Sleeping Car and Tourism Company, shifted its business model to in-train services and hotel management, and later discontinued its luxury trains.
On May 22, 1977, direct trains between Paris and Istanbul ceased operation.
On May 25, 1982, Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. ran a luxury train called the "Venice Simplon-Orient Express" from London (UK) to Venice (Italy) via Paris, and later to Istanbul. This service is still running today (as of September 2009).
In addition, luxury trains called the "Orient Express" operate in various places, including from China and Thailand to Singapore, India, and the United States.
The British newspaper The Independent reported on August 22, 2009 that "the Orient Express will be discontinued within the year due to passengers declining due to improved transportation options and rising costs." However, this "Orient Express" is not the Hotels Company's "luxury train," but simply an international night train.

ヨーロッパを発祥とする長距離豪華列車のこと。豪華列車とは、優等客車を多く連ね、一般の列車よりも内装やサービスが優れている列車のことを指す。
1883年にベルギーのワゴン・リ社(現在の本社はパリ)によって運行を開始された同列車は、1930年代の最盛期にはパリ(フランス)～イスタンブール(トルコ)間を結ぶ豪華列車として、王族や経済人などに愛用され、のちにアガサ・クリスティーの『オリエント急行殺人事件』の舞台にもなった。また、同社は同じ名称で西欧地域と東欧地域を結ぶ豪華列車を各地に走らせた。
第2次世界大戦後は、東西分断の影響を受け、運行は行われたものの、スムーズな運行には戻らなかった。かつての豪華列車は、1962年には食堂車も連結していない普通の夜行列車になり、末期には[0]客層も一般客が中心となった。1967年には、ワゴン・リ社は「国際寝台車兼ツーリズム・カンパニー」と名を変え、列車内でのサービスとホテル経営に業態を転換し、後に同社の豪華列車も廃止となる。
1977年5月22日には、パリ～イスタンブール間の直通列車は、運行を終了させた。
一方、1982年5月25日にオリエント・エクスプレス・ホテルズ社がロンドン(イギリス)からパリ経由でベネチア(イタリア)まで「ベニス・シンプロン・オリエント急行」と称する豪華列車を走らせ、後にはイスタンブールまで運行されるようになった。この運行は今でも(2009年9月現在)続いている。
また、「オリエント急行」を称する豪華列車は中国・タイ～シンガポール・インド・アメリカなど、各地で運行されている。
2009年8月22日付けの英紙『インディペンデント』は、「交通手段の発達やコスト高で乗客が離れたことにより、オリエント急行が年内に廃止される」と報じたが、この「オリエント急行」というのは、ホテルズ社の「豪華列車」ではなく、単なる国際夜行列車のことである。
