Asa

Japanese: 厚狭 - あさ
Asa

A district of Sanyo-Onoda City in the southwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The former Asa Town became Sanyo Town in 1956 (Showa 31), and Sanyo Town merged with Onoda City in 2005 (Heisei 17) to form Sanyo-Onoda City. The Asa Basin is wide and remains of the jori (traditional Japanese grid) structure remain, and it was the site of the ancient Asa Village. It developed as a post station and market town on the Sanyo Road in the early modern period. It is a source of Akama inkstone ore. It is also a key transportation hub where the JR Sanyo Main Line and Mine Line split off. Asa Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen opened in 1999.
