〘Noun〙 The name for a type of military ship used from the Sengoku period to the Edo period, derived from the ships belonging to customs established mainly in ports on the main sea routes of the Seto Inland Sea during the Muromachi period. Smaller and more agile than the Ataka-bune , they were fast ships with defensive armor around them and had gaps for bows and guns where appropriate . Along with the Ataka-bune, they formed the core of the navy, and after the Ataka-bune were banned in 1609, they became the backbone of the navies of various domains. Generally, ships with around 40 oars were called nakazeki , and larger ones had around 80 oars, and were used by various daimyo's royal ships. The Tenchimaru 76 oars built by Tokugawa Iemitsu is a typical example. They are also called hayabune, and smaller ones are called koseki-bune or kobaya.
