Iwaki Province

Japanese: 磐城国 - いわきのくに
Iwaki Province

This province was established on December 7, 1868 (Meiji 1) when Mutsu Province was divided into five provinces: Iwaki, Iwashiro, Rikuzen, Rikuchu, and Mutsu. It was established in the area that corresponds to the southern and eastern parts of Fukushima Prefecture and the southern tip of Miyagi Prefecture, and consisted of 13 districts: Shirakawa (Nishi Shirakawa), Ishikawa, Tamura, Kikuta, Shirakawa (Higashi Shirakawa), Iwasaki, Iwaki, Naraha, Shireha, Namekata, Uda, Date, and Watari. However, according to the Daijokan Nisshi No. 110 of the following year, 1869, a revision of the division of provinces was carried out on December 8 of the same year, and Date District was incorporated into Iwaki Province, and the two districts of Katta and Igu were transferred from Iwaki Province to Iwaki Province. As a result, Iwaki Province had 14 districts, with a rice yield of 606,904 koku, 7 to, 9 sho, 5 go, 6 shaku, 6 sai. On August 21, 1876, when Fukushima, Wakamatsu, and Iwaki Prefectures were merged to form Fukushima Prefecture, the northern districts of Iwaki Province, Watari, Igu, and Katta, were incorporated into Miyagi Prefecture, and all other districts were incorporated into Fukushima Prefecture. In 1896, the three districts of Kikuta, Iwaki, and Iwaki became Iwaki District, the two districts of Naraha and Shireha became Futaba District, and the two districts of Namegata and Uta became Soma District.
