A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Danaidae. Originally native to North and South America, it is also found in the Pacific islands and tropical Asia, where it is said to have spread secondary to the cultivation of milkweed. It is a highly migratory species, and there are known to have been cases where it formed swarms and migrated from the Americas to Europe via the Atlantic Ocean. In Japan, two cases were discovered in the Tokyo metropolitan area in 1950, and an outbreak was reported on Amami Oshima in 1983, but these were either vagrants or temporary outbreaks caused by vagrants. In the United States, it is distributed up to southern Canada in summer, but in winter it migrates to the southern United States, including California and Florida, or Mexico, where it hibernates in groups. The food plant for the larvae is milkweed, a plant of the Asclepiadaceae family. [Takashi Shiramizu] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
