An evergreen perennial fern of the Dryopteris family, commonly found in lowland forests and forest edges from the Kanto region westward. The rhizome runs short and horizontal, with 3-4 leaves. The leaves are bipinnate, dark green, papery, and have 3-7 pairs of lateral pinnae and an identically shaped terminal pinnae. The leaflets are nearly parallelogram-shaped, with acute serrations at the tips of short spines. The sporangia are located close to the margins of the leaflets, and the integument is reniform with some of the edges extending in a hair-like manner. It prefers moist soil, and is sometimes considered an indicator plant for cedar reforestation. The parent species, A. amabilis (Bl.) Tindale, is distributed from India through China to Yakushima.
