Hermann Günther Grassmann

German mathematician and linguist. Born in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland), he was a teacher at the gymnasium there. His most famous work is his magnum opus Ausdehnungslehre (The Discourse on the Universe). It was published in 1844 and revised in 1862, but was ignored for a long time because its contents were too far removed from the mathematics of the time and its writing was too difficult to understand. Grassmann's work was not accepted until the end of the 19th century. In linguistics, he discovered "Grassmann's Law" regarding aspirated sounds in Proto-Indo-European languages, and is famous for his Sanskrit dictionary of the Indian classic Rigveda .

ドイツの数学者、言語学者。シュテッティン（現、ポーランドのシュチェチン）に生まれ、同地のギムナジウムの教師であった。もっとも著名な業績は大著『広延論』Ausdehnungslehreである。この書物は1844年に出版され、1862年にその改訂版が出たが、内容が当時の数学からあまりにもかけ離れ、記述も難解であったため、長い間無視されていた。グラスマンの業績が受け入れられるようになったのは、19世紀も終わりに近づいてからである。言語学では、インド・ヨーロッパ祖語の帯気音に関する「グラスマンの法則」を発見したほか、とくにインドの古典『リグ・ベーダ』Rigvedaに関するサンスクリット（梵語(ぼんご)）の辞書は有名である。
