A salt lake in northwestern Utah, in the western United States. It has an elevation of 1,280 m, an area of 3,681 km2, and an average depth of 4 m, with a maximum depth of 11 m. The salinity is about 25%, and the only living organisms are algae, small shrimp, protozoa, and others. It is estimated that 6 billion tons of salt is stored, and salt production is the main industry. It is a remnant of the huge Pleistocene Lake Bonneville. Although it existed on maps as a semi-legendary lake in the late 18th century, it was officially discovered in 1824 by James Bridger. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
