Ani [town] - Ani

Japanese: 阿仁[町] - あに
Ani [town] - Ani
A former town in Kitaakita County, located in the upper reaches of the Ani River in the central-northern part of Akita Prefecture. The famous Ani Mine was first discovered with silver, gold around the Keicho era, and copper around the Kanbun era. It was developed as Ukeyama or Jikiyama, and became the main production area for Akita Domain's Nagasaki Copper. After the Meiji era, it was sold to Furukawa Ichibei, but closed in 1931. The Akita Inland Longitudinal Railway runs through the town, and forestry is thriving with the vast mountain forests as a backdrop. It has been designated as a special area for the Ani-Tazawa Comprehensive Development. In March 2005, it merged with Takanosu Town, Moriyoshi Town, and Aikawa Town in Kitaakita County to become a city, Kitaakita City. 371.92 km2 . 4,356 people (2003).
