Oe Toshio - Oesueo

Japanese:
Oe Toshio - Oesueo

A pole vaulter in track and field. Born in Kyoto Prefecture, he graduated from Keio University. In the pole vault at the Berlin Olympics in 1936, five competitors competed in the final, including American Meadows (then world record holder), Septon, Graeber, and Japan's Nishida Shuhei. The competition lasted for over five hours under night floodlights, and Meadows, who cleared 4.35 meters, was declared the winner. Nishida and Oe were in a battle for second and third place, and the judges decided that it would be too harsh for the competition to continue, and made the first ruling in Olympic history that the rankings would be decided by consultation between the Japanese officials. In the end, Nishida, the older of the two, came in second, but after consulting with each other, the two decided to join the silver and bronze medals together, which became a hot topic as the "medal of friendship." The following year, in 1937, he was invited to the US Indoor Championships, where he took revenge on Meadows, jumping 4.35 meters that same year and setting a new Japanese record at the time. He was killed in action at Lamon Bay in the Philippines during the early stages of the Pacific War.
