A biennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. Native to Europe, it is an introduced plant that was introduced in the early Meiji period. It grows wild on roadsides and fields throughout Japan. The stem branches at the base and spreads above ground, with opposite or alternate leaves, oval and short stalks. In early spring, long pedicels grow in the leaf axils and bloom flowers about 8 mm in diameter. The corolla is deep and four-lobed, lavender-colored with purple stripes. It has two stamens. The closely related Veronica persica is also a naturalized plant, with branched, upright stems that bloom in the upper leaf axils from May to July with sessile flowers about 4 mm in diameter. The closely related Veronica persica is distributed in Japan and East Asia, with small flowers and pedicels as long as the leaves. Its name comes from the fact that the fruit resembles a dog's testicle. It has become less common since Veronica persica spread.
