A German musical family whose greatest member was Johann Sebastian Bach. They made their living in music for generations, mainly in central Germany, and produced more than 80 musicians between the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 19th century, making them the largest musical family in history (see figure). They started out as low-ranking entertainers called Spielmann, but eventually rose to prominence in society, becoming town musicians, church organists and cantors, court musicians and conductors, and music directors in major cities, and became a force that played a major role in the musical life of Germany in terms of both quality and quantity.
