Fragonard - Jean Honoré Fragonard

Fragonard - Jean Honoré Fragonard

French painter. Born in Grasse in the south of France. He moved with his family to Paris as a boy, where he studied under Chardin and Boucher, and was strongly influenced by the latter. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1752 and studying under Carl van Loo at the École Royale des Élèbes Protégées, he studied at the Academie de France in Rome for five years from 1756. He was attracted to the Baroque decorative paintings of artists such as Pietro da Cortona and Tiepolo, and his interest in landscape painting was awakened through his sketches of the suburbs of Rome. His style was influenced by Italy, but also showed sympathy with the Dutch school of painting, including Rembrandt and Ruisdael.

In 1765, he was made an associate member of the Academy with his historical painting "Coressus and Callirhoe," and began his career as a promising decorative painter, but he soon realized that genre painting was more suited to his talents, and he distanced himself from the Academy and salons. He began to work on sensual themes full of the joy of life, working independently for private clients. After the French Revolution, he served as the director of a museum through David's introduction, but in his later years he was socially and economically disadvantaged and died in Paris. He is considered the last painter to represent the glamor of the 18th century in France, and his representative works include "The Swing" (Wallace Collection, London), the series "The Tale of Love" (Frick Collection, New York), and "The Exercise" (Louvre Museum).
