...Although the majority of the population is Indian, there are also a few Asians, British and Afrikaners (white people of South Africa). The government of Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1905-97) restricted Asian residents, who controlled commerce in rural areas, to living in four cities. The Chewa and Nyanja people formed the Maravi Kingdom by the 16th century, but later suffered from the slave trade by Arabs in East Africa, and came under British protection at the end of the 19th century.
