1910‐56 The greatest black pianist in jazz history. Also known as Tatum. Born in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Born blind in one eye and extremely weak in the other. At the age of 13, he took up the violin, but switched to the piano and became a professional. In 1932, his performance at the Onyx Club on 52nd Street in New York attracted attention. In 1938, he achieved great success in London, and from 1943 onwards, he was active as a member of a trio with Tiny Grimes (guitar) and Leloy (Slam) Stewart (bass).
