The greatest black pianist in jazz history. Also known as Tatum. Born in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Born blind in one eye and extremely weak in the other. At the age of 13, he took up the violin, but switched to the piano and became a professional. In 1932, his performance at the Onyx Club on 52nd Street in New York attracted attention. In 1938, he achieved great success in London, and from 1943 onwards, he was active as a member of a trio with Tiny Grimes (guitar) and Leloy (Slam) Stewart (bass).

ジャズ史上最大の黒人ピアニスト。テータムとも呼ぶ。アメリカのオハイオ州トリードに生まれる。生来，片目は全盲，もう一方は極度の弱視であった。13歳でバイオリンを手がけたが，ピアノに転向してプロになり，やがて1932年にニューヨーク52番街のオニックス･クラブにおける演奏が注目された。38年にはロンドンで大成功を収め，43年以降タイニー･グライムスTiny Grimes(ギター)，スラム･スチュアートLeloy(Slam) Stewart(ベース)を率いたトリオで活躍した。
