Shaku - Shaku

A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). It has thick roots and stems that are 0.8 to 1.4 meters tall. Its leaves are soft and twice trifoliate compound. It blooms white flowers in May and June. Its fruits are blackish and have a dull luster. It grows in mountainous wetlands and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, Siberia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. It is also called Koshaku, but the meaning of Shaku is unknown. A variety with hairy fruits is called Onishaku. There are 20 species of the Gemma genus distributed around the world.
