La Grande Illusion

La Grande Illusion

French film from 1937, directed by Jean Renoir. Based on a true story from World War I, and with the help of screenwriter Charles Spaak (1903-1975), this film appeals for human fraternity and equality. A French captain (Pierre Fresnay (1897-1975)) and a lieutenant (Jean Gabin) are shot down during a reconnaissance flight and become prisoners of war with the German army. The head of the prison camp (Erich von Stroheim) feels an affinity for the captain, who is of the same aristocratic background as himself, but the lieutenant, a former mechanic, plots an escape with the son of a fellow prisoner, a Jewish banker, and finally succeeds at the captain's sacrifice. Through his accurate and realistic depictions (including the use of French, German, and English), Renoir preached a great humanism that transcends differences of nationality, language, class, and race. It was a huge success in France and the United States when it was released, but was banned in Germany and Italy under fascism, and was not released in Japan until World War II. It was released in Japan in 1949 (Showa 24).
