...The northeastern part of the town includes the Atsuta Hills and part of the Ishikari Plateau, but the main part of the town is sand dunes and the lowlands behind them, with the Ishikari River running through it. Since the Ishikari Basin was established in the Keicho era (1596-1615), the town has long been a center of fishing, mainly salmon and herring, and until the opening of the port of Otaru in the Meiji era, it served as the gateway to the Ishikari Plain, and developed as a relay point for the Ishikari River basin, including Sapporo. After that, fishing declined, and the town became an agricultural region, mainly rice paddies, and after World War II, rice paddies were developed on the sand dunes. ...
