Orkney is the administrative capital of the Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland, in the United Kingdom. It is located on the north central coast of the main island of Mainland. The Norse settled there early on, and in 1137 they built the magnificent St. Magnus Cathedral using locally produced red sandstone. This cathedral is one of the most complete surviving examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and is thought to be the only "Norman" cathedral built by the Norse. As well as being a key transportation point connecting it to the Scottish mainland, it developed into a commercial centre, with fertile agricultural areas at its back. There are also factories for shipbuilding, butter and cheese production, egg packing, and more. Population: 6,330 (2004 estimate).
