Asakura Takakage Articles - Asakura Takakage Articles
This is a family precept established by Asakura Takakage (also known as Norihide, Shigekage, or Toshikage; Buddhist name Eirin Muneo), a feudal lord in the Sengoku period of Echizen Province. It is believed to have been established in 1471-1481, during Takakage's later years. The Kurokawa edition has the title "Asakura Eirin Kabegaki (Wall Inscription on the Wall)," the Arai Hakuseki edition has the title "A Letter to the Descendants of Asakura Eirin Nyudo (Asakura Eirin Nyudo Shisonhe Issho)," and the Gunsho Ruiju has the title "Seventeen Articles of Asakura Toshikage (Asakura Toshikage Juushikajo)." The precepts consist of 17 articles, with the Kurokawa edition having 16. The contents of the document include appointing people to important positions such as Shukuro regardless of family status, prohibiting anyone other than the Asakura clan from building castles, and forcing their vassals to live in Ichijodani near the castle, all of which reflect the centralized power of the Asakura clan as a warring states lord.
