An inlet on the west coast of the southern part of New Zealand's South Island. A fjord in the northern part of Fiordland National Park, with steep cliffs on both sides, with Mount Pembroke (2,045 m) on the north coast and Mitre Peak (1,692 m) on the south coast. It is a tourist destination with a road and an airport. Since ancient times, Maori have come to collect greenstone (bowenite, a type of serpentine) via the mountain path (Milford Track) that connects here to the northern end of Lake Te Anau in the south. The name comes from a British place name. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
