But it wasn't until the premiere of Le Soulier de Satin (completed in Tokyo in 1925) directed by JL Barraud in 1943 that Claudel's plays were truly recognized. Le Soulier de Satin, subtitled Four Days in Spain, is a synthesis of the "passion of the conqueror's passion for universal unity" that had been present since La Head of Gold (also premiered in 1959) and the "play of forbidden passion" of Partage de Midi (1906, premiered in 1948), a play about the poet's existential crisis, that is, the failure of his will to become a priest, which was also his own experience, and his forbidden love with a married woman.
