A Toho film produced in 1938. This is a masterpiece by director Ishida Tamizo (1901-1972), who made 83 films, including period dramas, melodramas, and comedies, from his debut with Love Wound (1926) until his retirement in 1947. Based on an original story and screenplay by playwright Morimoto Kaoru, this unique work captures the turmoil of the end of the Edo period through a restaurant in Gion, Kyoto, where people are anxious and frustrated by the war between the shogunate and Satsuma-Choshu just before the Meiji Restoration, and focuses on the tragedy of the common people at this turning point in history. Without featuring a single man, it skillfully uses the Kyoto dialect to portray women's feelings and the atmosphere of the times.

1938年製作の東宝映画。《愛傷》(1926)でデビューしてから1947年に引退するまで，時代劇，メロドラマ，喜劇など83本の作品を手がけた石田民三(1901‐72)監督の代表作。劇作家森本薫の原作･脚本で，明治維新直前の幕府と薩長の戦いにさらされて不安と焦燥にかられる京都祇園の料亭を通して幕末の動乱をとらえ，歴史の転換期における庶民の悲劇に目を向け，男の姿は1人も登場させずに，京都弁を巧みに使って女の感情と時代の雰囲気を描いた異色作である。
