A Toho film produced in 1938. This is a masterpiece by director Ishida Tamizo (1901-1972), who made 83 films, including period dramas, melodramas, and comedies, from his debut with Love Wound (1926) until his retirement in 1947. Based on an original story and screenplay by playwright Morimoto Kaoru, this unique work captures the turmoil of the end of the Edo period through a restaurant in Gion, Kyoto, where people are anxious and frustrated by the war between the shogunate and Satsuma-Choshu just before the Meiji Restoration, and focuses on the tragedy of the common people at this turning point in history. Without featuring a single man, it skillfully uses the Kyoto dialect to portray women's feelings and the atmosphere of the times. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
