Menado (English spelling)

Menado (English spelling)

A port city in the northern part of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. Located near the tip of the Minahasa Peninsula, facing the Celebes Sea. Capital of North Sulawesi Province. Population 372,887 (2000), 427,409 (2018 estimate). Compared to Makassar to the south, it is the political, economic and cultural center of the northern half of Sulawesi. The name Menado is said to be derived from the small island Manalo in the bay. It is also called Manado. The port is a natural harbor that provides a safe anchorage against the northeast-southwest monsoon. The Minahasan people, who make up the majority of the population, are long-time Christians, with many Chinese and Arab residents. In the early modern period, the Spanish first arrived here as a stopover on the way to the Maluku Islands, and then the Dutch built Fort Amsterdam in 1657. The wide streets are lined with trees, and the southern coastal area is made up of government offices, churches, and residential areas, with the remains of Fort Amsterdam remaining. The central Wenang Hill is a park, and the western side is a bustling commercial district. In addition to copra and coffee, it has also recently become a base for inshore fishing. The National University of Sam Latulangi and the regional airport are located here.
