Yoshio Kimura

Yoshio Kimura

Shogi player. Born in Koto Ward, Tokyo. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he became the apprentice of the 13th Meijin, Sekine Kinjiro. In 1920 (Taisho 5), he became a 4th dan, and after that, with outstanding results, he became an 8th dan at the age of 22. In 1935 (Showa 10), when his teacher Sekine opened the hereditary Meijin title, he became the top 8th dan in the Meijin tournament, and in 1937 he became the first Meijin, and for the next 10 years he was the invincible Meijin, establishing the Kimura era. As the chairman of the Shogi Taiseikai, he led the shogi world and led it to prosperity. After the Second World War, in 1947 (Showa 22), he lost the Meijin title in the 6th Meijin tournament, losing to Tsukada Masao 8th dan, but regained it in the 8th tournament in 1949. In 1952, he lost to Oyama Yasuharu 8th dan in the 11th Meijin tournament, retiring from active play and assuming the title of 14th Meijin. In 1985, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In 1978, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Third Class, with Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. His students included Itaya Shiro, Hanamura Motoji, both 9th dan, and Kitadate Shuya, 8th dan.

将棋棋士。東京・江東区の生まれ。1916年(大正5)関根金次郎13世名人に入門。20年四段、以後抜群の成績で22歳八段。35年(昭和10)師の関根の世襲名人位開放に伴う実力名人戦で八段中の首位になり、37年第1期名人、以来10年間無敵名人として木村時代を築いた。将棋大成会時代の会長としても棋界を統率、隆盛に導いた。第二次世界大戦後の47年(昭和22)に第6期名人戦で塚田正夫八段に敗れて名人位を失ったが、49年の第8期に奪回した。52年第11期名人戦に大山康晴(やすはる)八段に敗れ、現役を退き14世名人を襲位した。60年紫綬褒章(しじゅほうしょう)受章。78年勲三等旭日(きょくじつ)中綬章の叙勲を受けた。門下は板谷(いたや)四郎、花村元司(もとじ)両九段、北楯修哉(きただてしゅうや)八段ら。
