The name of a part of a Buddhist ceremony. It is a solemn ritual that takes place before the main part of a Buddhist ceremony, and is performed to make the inside of the hall solemn and pure. It consists of two types of chanting music, bai (singing) and sange (scattering flowers, with the syllable "taiyo" added). It can also refer to the entire Buddhist ceremony, including this. It is a style unique to Esoteric Buddhism, and is used in mitsudate (secret ceremony) where the leader performs the ritual, or in ceremonies that combine exoteric and esoteric Buddhism. Representative examples that include this include mandala offerings, doshakaji-e (ceremony of the Great Prajnaparamita), daihannyae (ceremony of the Great Prajnaparamita), urabon-e (ceremony of the Ullambana), and the Rishu-zammai-e and mieku-e (ceremony of the Shingon sect). In both the Tendai and Shingon sects, it is also used in Rongi-ho-e (ceremony of the Rongi).
