A type of student song, some of which overlap with school songs and cheer songs. They are characterized by rhythmic yet mournful melodies that evoke the mood of the elite class of the past, such as those of old high schools, university preparatory schools, and old universities, and the lyrics are in the style of Chinese poetry or Yamato, and the overwhelming majority of them are about celebrating youth. They are often accompanied by physical movements and sung in a sentimental mood around a bonfire. Well-known songs include First High School's "The Blood of the Amur River" (1901), "The Color of Flowers in Full Bloom in Spring" (1901), and "Aa, the Flowers of the Ceremonial Cup" (1902), the Third High School's strolling song "The Flowers of the Hills Blooming in Red" (1904), and Hokkaido Imperial University Preparatory School's "The Capital is in Yayoi" (1912). The first Japan Dormitory Song Festival was held in October 1961 (Showa 36) by the Japan Dormitory Song Promotion Association, and has been held every year in Tokyo since then.
