Inryoken Diary - Inryoken Diary
Also called "Onryoken Nichiroku." Diary of the head priest of Rokuon-in Temple in Shokoku-ji Temple, Kyoto. 61 volumes. Official diaries for three generations of priests, Kikei Shinzui, Ekishi Soshin, and Kisen Shusho. Diaries covering 40 years, from 1435 to 1466 under Kikei and from 1484 to 1493 under Kisen, were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. In the early Muromachi period, the authority to appoint Zen temples and monks was initially held by the head priest of Rokuon-in Temple, but after Kikei was under the protection of Ashikaga Yoshinori, the 9th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, this authority was transferred to the head priest of Rokuon-in Temple. It is an essential historical material for understanding the system and cultural artifacts of Zen Buddhism at that time, the political situation of the Muromachi Shogunate, and the movements of samurai society.
