It is an animal of the mammalian class, order Odonata, family Anteater. It has one genus and one species. It is the largest of all anteaters, with a body length of 1-1.3 meters, a tail length of 65-90 centimeters, and a weight of 18-39 kilograms. It mainly lives alone in the swamps and grasslands of southern Honduras and other parts of Central America to northern Argentina. It gives birth to one baby at a time, with a gestation period of 190 days, and the baby stays with its parent for about a year. It is designated as an internationally protected animal by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
