Shopping street - Shotengai (English spelling)

Japanese: 商店街 - しょうてんがい（英語表記）shopping street

An urban area where retail and wholesale functions are concentrated. There are urban (central) shopping districts centered in the city center, secondary (→ sub-center) shopping districts that develop at transportation origins and termini, and neighborhood shopping districts that develop in residential areas. In Tokyo, Chuo Ward (Nihonbashi, Kyobashi, Ginza) is a typical example of an urban shopping district. There, high-end shopping goods are generally traded, and large department stores have also developed. Secondary shopping districts are found in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, and other areas that have a sub-center character. Underground shopping districts are similar to urban shopping districts. Recently, supermarkets and shopping centers with parking lots have also moved into areas away from the established urban areas.

小売りや卸売りの機能が集中している市街地。都心を中心とする都心 (中心) 商店街，交通の起終点に発達する第2次 (→副都心 ) 商店街，さらに住宅地などに発達する近隣商店街がある。東京の場合，中央区 (日本橋，京橋，銀座) などは都心商店街の典型。ここでは一般に高級買い回り品の取り引きが盛んで，巨大なデパートの発達もみられる。第2次商店街は，新宿，渋谷，池袋など副都心的性格をもつところにみられる。都心商店街に類似したものとして，地下商店街がある。また最近は，既成市街地から離れたところに駐車場をもつスーパーマーケットやショッピングセンターなども進出してきた。
