1788‐1869 The founder of modern education in Moldova, eastern Romania. At a time when general education was provided by churches and foreign (Greek) schools, he was the first in Moldova to offer practical classes in Romanian (1813), and contributed to the awakening of national consciousness. He also published the first newspaper in Moldova, realized the performance of plays in the mother tongue, and wrote works (poems, historical dramas, etc.) with a strong classical influence, but in his later years he became politically conservative and opposed the unification of Wallachia and Moldova.
