Common name for the Ueno Library, a branch of the National Diet Library located in Ueno Park, Tokyo. Founded in 1872 by the Ministry of Education in the Yushima Seido Hall as Shojakukan (Book Library), it changed name several times afterwards, moving to Ueno Park in 1885, and becoming the Imperial Library in 1897. After World War II, it became the National Library, with a collection of one million books, but was merged into the National Diet Library in 1949, with most of the books transferred there.
