Torii Pass

Japanese: 鳥居峠 - とりいとうげ
Torii Pass
A pass on the Nakasendo road in the northern part of the Kiso Valley in southwest Nagano Prefecture. It is 1,197m above sea level. It forms the watershed between the Narai River on the Sea of Japan side and the Kiso River on the Pacific side. When the Kisoji road was opened in 713, it was called Agatazaka and was the border between Shinano and Mino. In ancient times, it was thought to have been the northern border of the Kiso Valley, and in the Middle Ages, the descendants of Minamoto no Yoshinaka built a torii gate here, which is where the name came from. In the early modern period, during the Nakasendo road era, there was a lot of traffic, and there is a stone monument bearing a haiku poem by Matsuo Basho, who passed through the pass in 1688. It became deserted after the opening of a tunnel for the Chuo Main Line and National Route 19, but in 1971 it was developed into a nature trail.

It was the highest point of the old Shinanoji branch road, Ueda Kaido (National Route 144), and was an important transportation route connecting Joshu and Shinshu. The villages of Furunagai on the east and Shibusawa on the west developed below the pass. It belongs to Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park.
