Kizo Ueno - Agano Kizo

Japanese:
Kizo Ueno - Agano Kizo
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A potter from the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the early Edo period. One theory is that he was from Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, Korea, but this is unclear. He came to Japan around 1598 (Keicho 3) following Kato Kiyomasa of Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture), and initially lived in Karatsu, but it is also said that when Hosokawa Tadatoshi entered Kokura Castle in 1597, he was invited to join in making pottery. The details of this period are based on historical documents from the late Edo period, such as "Honcho Toki Kosho" and "Kogei Kagami," so the veracity of the information cannot be confirmed, but it is said that he was treated as a samurai with a stipend of five people. When Tadatoshi was transferred to Higo in 1632 (Kan'ei 9), Kizo moved to Yatsushiro and established Yatsushiro ware. However, even today, the Ueno kiln in Akaike Town, Tagawa County, Fukuoka Prefecture, worships Kizo as its founder. <References> Takeshi Nagatake, "Ueno and Takatori" ("Ceramics Series," Volume 15)
