A mining town located about 600 km (by road) northeast of Perth in Western Australia, Australia. It is made up of two neighboring gold mining towns. It has a population of 25,000 (1991). It is served by transcontinental railroads and roads, and water is supplied by a long-distance water pipe from Perth (built in 1903). It has been a representative gold mining town since the 1890s, but today the nickel resources of Kambalda (53 km south), which have been developed since the 1960s, form an important economic base.
