When left in air or heated while blowing air into it, it easily absorbs oxygen and undergoes an oxidation reaction, undergoing condensation polymerization to produce lynoxyn, a resilient, water-resistant, translucent polymeric substance. Taking advantage of its high drying property, linseed oil is used for paint, varnish, linoleum, oil cloth, and printing ink, as well as for rubber substitutes, nitrated oil, medicinal purposes, and as a raw material for soft soap.
