Fliedner, T.

...She was born to wealthy British parents while they were staying in Florence, and was named after them. She visited hospitals in various countries, and in particular received formal nursing training at the Protestant Women's Service Hospital, founded by Theodor Fliedner (1800-64) on the outskirts of Dusseldorf, Germany, where she learned how important highly trained nurses were at a time when nursing was considered to be a servant job that ignored skills. In 1853, she was appointed director of the London Hospital for Infirm Women, and when the Crimean War broke out in 1854, she led 38 nurses to the Scutari base in Turkey, where she worked hard to improve the army hospital, where infectious diseases were occurring frequently due to the extremely poor sanitary conditions.
