Gushikawa [city] - Gushikawa
An old city on the central east coast of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1968. It was originally a farming village on a coral reef plateau at an altitude of 10-80m, but after World War II, the population increased rapidly due to an influx of refugees, and it was incorporated as a city for a time as Maebaru City. There are many US military bases, and the city center developed around Agena and the Taira River. Sugarcane, vegetable, and flower cultivation is thriving, and livestock is also raised. There are sugar and paper factories. The ruins of Agena Castle (historic site) and the Agena Bullring arena are located here. In April 2005, it merged with Ishikawa City, Yonashiro Town in Nakagami County, and Katsuren Town to become a city and become Uruma City. 31.99 km2 . 64,212 people (2003).
