Gamelans in which one or several sulings play the melody, a small kendang leads the tempo and rhythm, and bamboo percussion instruments are used for musical and decorative instruments, are probably the oldest and most folkloric. Among the gamelans still played today, gamelan angklung and gamelan carung are important. Next comes gamelan gambu, which uses the same type but metal percussion instruments for musical and decorative instruments.
