Ghadames - Gadames (English spelling)

Japanese: ガダメス - がだめす(英語表記)Gadàmes
Ghadames - Gadames (English spelling)

An oasis town in western Libya, North Africa. Located near the borders with Algeria and Tunisia. Population 15,300 (2002 estimate). Located at the bottom of a valley in a basin and blessed with abundant spring water, it has long been a key location on the caravan route connecting Tripoli and the Sudan region. During the Roman Empire period (1st to 3rd centuries), a military fort was built to suppress the Garamantes, and Christian graves remain. Currently, a border patrol is stationed here, and residents engage in commerce and date palm cultivation.

[Hiroshi Fujii]

In 1986, the "Old Town of Ghadames" was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), but due to political instability resulting from the civil war, it was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2016.
