A general term for mites belonging to the family Trombiculidae. Only the larvae (with three pairs of legs) parasitize on the surface of the body of mice and other animals, while the nymphs and adults (with four pairs of legs) live underground. More than 2,000 species have been found worldwide, and more than 80 species in Japan, but only a few of them transmit scrub typhus. In Japan, the mites that transmit scrub typhus are Akatsugamushi (red cricket), whose larvae appear in the summer in the Shinano River, Agano River, Mogami River, and Omono River basins; Tosatsugamushi (tosatsugamushi), whose larvae appear in the summer in some coastal areas of Shikoku; and Scutellaria scutellaria, whose larvae appear mainly in the fall and are scattered throughout Yamagata Prefecture and south, especially in the Izu Seven Islands. → Related article: Mite | Mites Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
