Numazu Domain

Japanese:
Numazu Domain

This was a domain that ruled the Numazu region of Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). In 1601 (Keicho 6), Okubo Tadasuke moved from Kazusa Mobara to Sanmaibashi Castle (Numazu Old Castle), which had been there since the end of the Sengoku period, and established the domain with 20,000 koku of rice. However, in 1613, Tadasuke had no heir and the domain was dissolved. After that, this area was sometimes the territory of Tokugawa Yorinobu and Tokugawa Tadanaga, but most of it continued to be controlled by the shogunate's magistrate.

In 1777 (An'ei 6), Mizuno Tadatomo, a lord of Ohama in Mikawa with a stipend of 13,000 koku, was promoted from young councilor to chamberlain, and given an additional stipend of 7,000 koku and 3,000 ryo for castle construction funds, which allowed him to build Numazu Shinjo Castle and enter the domain, restoring it to a fief of 20,000 koku. The Mizuno clan was the family of Tokugawa Ieyasu's mother, Denzuin, and had been the lord of Matsumoto Domain in Shinano for generations, starting with Tadatomo's direct ancestor, Tadakiyo, but during the reign of Tadatsune, he was stripped of his fief after he engaged in a sword attack on Mori Moronari in the castle. The family name alone was passed down to his uncle, Tadayoshi (Tadatomo's father). Tadatamo started out as a servant of the Shogun's heir Takechiyo (Ieshige), and was promoted to chamberlain and then senior councilor while remaining a chamberlain, supporting the Tanuma era (30,000 koku). His adopted son, Tadanari (chief senior councilor), recoined currency and earned more than 600,000 ryo in profits (50,000 koku). After him, Tadatamo was succeeded by Tadayori, Tadayu, Tadanaga, Tadahiro, Tadanobu, and Tadanori, leading to the Meiji era. During this time, Numazu Domain's Western studies led to the creation of works such as the Yochi Navigation Chart, Mizuno Family Records, and Mizuno Tadataka Family Records. In 1868 (Keio 4), with the establishment of the Sunpu Domain by the Tokugawa family, he was transferred to Kikuma in Kazusa.
