A famous track and field athlete. Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Graduated from Waseda University. Placed 4th in the triple jump at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 (Showa 3). At the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932, he won the triple jump with a new world record of 15.72 meters. He also placed 3rd in the long jump. A genius with a strong spring in his step, he set a Japanese record of 7.98 meters in the long jump in 1931 and received the Hermes Cup, but due to some mistake, he was not notified and only found out about it in 1963 (Showa 38) and had to accept it again. This Japanese record was not broken until 1970. He served as an executive of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and as president of Tottori Women's Junior College (now Tottori Junior College). In 1986, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. [Tsuneo Ishii] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
