Cast iron refers to pig iron for pig casting or pig casting itself. It is an iron alloy containing 3.0-3.6% carbon, 1-2% silicon, 0.5-1.0% manganese, 0.3-1.0% phosphorus, and 0.06-0.1% sulfur, and is easy to cast and cut. Carbon exists as free graphite in addition to the components of pearlite and cementite in the base material. When cast iron is cooled rapidly, a large amount of cementite precipitates, and the microscopic structure turns white, resulting in a state known as white pig iron, but if the cooling rate is slowed down, the cementite decomposes into graphite and iron, and at room temperature it becomes ferrite and graphite.
