Encyclopedia of the Alkaloids

...Nicotine, contained in tobacco, is an alkaloid with strong pharmacological activity and toxicity, and one cigarette contains enough nicotine to kill a small child. The Encyclopedia of the Alkaloids (1975) lists about 4,030 alkaloids, which are classified into 14 to 16 groups. See Tables I, II, III, IV, V, and VI.
