…The first urban civilization, mainly composed of Sumerian-speaking people, emerged here with overwhelming energy. Around the same time as Uruk, Eridu, Ur, Girsu, Lagash, and Umma also reached urban scale. During the Jamdat Nasr period (c. 3000 BC - c. 2800 BC), Shuruppak, Nippur, Kish, and Eshnunna developed into cities, and the use of characters as phonetic characters emerged, confirming that the language represented by the pictograms was Sumerian.
