Fault-tolerant system

Japanese: フォールトトレラントシステム（英語表記）fault-tolerant system

A computer system that does not cause a failure as a whole even if a fault occurs in each of the individual elements that make up the system. A system failure is said to have occurred when a user (a human using the system, a device controlled by the system, another computer system communicating with the system, etc.) feels that the computer system is no longer providing the service that the user expects. For example, there can be various types of failures, such as a system downtime, inability to access some functions, incorrect response timing, loss or alteration of data, and reduced processing performance.

システムを構成する個々の要素にフォールトfaultが発生したとしてもシステム全体としては障害failureを引き起こさないコンピューターシステムをいう。　コンピューターシステムが，ユーザー(そのシステムを利用する人間，そのシステムに制御される機器，そのシステムと通信する別のコンピューターシステムなど)の期待するサービスをしなくなったとユーザーが感じたら，システムに障害が起きたという。たとえば，システムダウン，一部機能へのアクセス不能，不正な応答タイミング，データの紛失や変質，処理性能の低下など，種々の形態の障害がありうる。
