Slaughter - Abandonment

Japanese: 斬罪 - ざんざい
Slaughter - Abandonment
(1) A type of punishment in the Kamakura period. It was also called dansai or hanpisei, and was a punishment by decapitation. The punishment was carried out at Rokujo-gawara in Kyoto and at Tatsuno-kuchi in Kamakura. (2) A type of punishment imposed on samurai in the Edo period. It was executed by beheading, as with the death penalty and criminal punishment. The Kojikata Osadamegaki states that the execution was carried out by a magistrate's constable at Kozukahara (Senju) or Suzugamori (Shinagawa), and that the inspectors were the okatometsuke and machiyoriki. The fields, houses, and belongings of the prisoner were confiscated, but the corpse was not executed by tameshigiri. (3) In the Kakeiritsu, a criminal code from the early Meiji period, the name of the punishment, originally named funshu, was changed to hanpisei in August 1869 (Meiji 2). The execution method was beheading. In the New Law Code of the following year, it was changed to simply "zan" (killing), and was abolished on January 1, 1882, with the enforcement of the old Criminal Code.
